Modernisation of Agricultural statistics

The State Data Agency (SDA), together with the Institute of Economics and Rural Development of the Lithuanian Centre of Social Sciences (LSSC), is implementing the project "Modernisation of Agricultural Statistics", funded by the EUROSTAT and the SDA. The coordinator of the project is SDA. LSSC is a partner of SDA.

Changes in agriculture as well as changes in administrative data sources when more and more data farmers have to enter in various state registers and data bases lead to challenges in National Statistical Institutions as well as in Other National Authorities in preparing the official statistics. Therefore, usual activities used for preparation for the statistical surveys as well as data calculation methods needs to be revised and modernised.

In order to adapt to new needs and improve the quality of data provided, Member States must adapt existing systems and make better use of available sources. In case of Lithuania, the following areas are particularly important: 1. Modernisation of the Statistical Farm Register; 2. Modernisation of Economic Accounts for Agriculture. The aim of the project is to explore the sources of administrative data in order to find additional valuable data that could be included in the calculation of the EAA. The main challenges are expected to be: the availability of data sources; the need for common definitions and concepts and methodological practices in the framework of the extension of the agricultural accounts to include variables affecting farmers' income.
