EU Common agricultural policy (CAP) exists for more than 50 years. This policy overpassed many reforms and changes during such long period. CAP became modified in comparison with its original version. It is very important to overlook the whole transition period and to learn what was done well and where more efforts have to be done. New programmed period after the year 2013 is coming. We need to know what should be finalized, what would be
the purpose of the CAP in the new period. The main aim of this paper is to identify major stages of EU CAP development and suggest guidelines for the period after the year 2013. This paper presents singularities of different development periods of CAP, according to defined indicators (production incentive, price regulation, support measures of the foreign trade, rural development and environmental concerns). CAP periods were placed in time and the connection with EU enlargement was showed.
