Determinants of green electricity choice in Lithuania: Environmental concern, energy behaviour, and the Ukraine conflict

Abstract

The encouragement of green electricity choice is vital. Thus, the aim of this analysis is to examine the impact of environmental aspects, concern over the military conflict in Ukraine, and behaviours related to energy consumption on the choice of green electricity. Referring to the data of a survey carried out in Lithuania, 2023, the binary logistic regression was applied. The results showed that one third of them stated that they have chosen green electricity. Environmental aspects, as climate change concern and attitudes towards usage of energy, significantly and positively affected the choice of green electricity. The concern about war in Ukraine only together with the contribution to changes in environmental concern positively influenced this behaviour. Meanwhile, the concern about military conflict together with the attitudes towards energy crisis negatively determined the choice of green electricity. In the model including behaviours related to energy consumption, only purchase of energy efficient appliances was significantly related to the choice of green electricity, while energy saving behaviours and the level of electricity consumption insignificantly affected this behaviour. This paper provides useful insight for policymakers how to promote the choice of green electricity in the context of military conflict.
